The legendary Offenhauser of Indy 500 fame holds its place as one of the all-time greatest engines to ever grace a race-chassis. The fact that its reign of oval dominance was held for over 50 years is an indication of bulletproof engineering and design. Offys had an uncanny capacity for power, often reaching and exceeding 700 horsepower during the turbocharged era. This fantastic video allows a youngster like myself to experience the distinctive Offy battle cry as these 4-banger monsters rumble down the straights. The rasp of the Offy is contrasted with what appears to be a V8 (or V12?) '70s Indy Car that returns fire with a demonic wail, separating racing epochs with the power of sound.
